As the peak whale season continues along the Overstrand coastline, Hermanus is preparing to welcome visitors for the annual Hermanus Whale Festival from 2 to 4 October 2026.

The Hermanus Whale Festival is the world’s only Eco-Marine Festival, celebrating the arrival of the Southern Right Whales to the shores of Hermanus each year. Held in the heart of the Cape Whale Coast, the festival combines world-class land-based whale watching with ocean conservation, environmental education, live entertainment, local food, markets, family activities, marine exhibitions, and community-driven experiences.
About the Festival
The Hermanus Whale Festival brings together tourism, nature, education, arts, culture, wellness, and local business to showcase the very best of Hermanus and the Western Cape while supporting responsible eco-tourism and marine conservation.

Every year, the Festival attracts thousands of local and international visitors, creating valuable economic opportunities for accommodation establishments, restaurants, shops, tour operators, artists, crafters, and local entrepreneurs throughout the Overstrand region.
Whether you come for the whales, the atmosphere, the ocean experiences, or the vibrant coastal energy — the Hermanus Whale Festival offers an unforgettable celebration of nature, community, and the spirit of the Whale Coast.
New to this year’s festival is Beach Volleyball at Grotto Beach, where visitors can enjoy three days of social play, beginner sessions, open-play courts, coaching clinics and exhibition matches, presented in collaboration with the Overberg Beach Volleyball Association and the Cape Beach Volleyball Hub.
