Mervyn Gers Ceramics has added Beach to its collection of glazes. Inspired by the ever-changing tones of the natural coastline, it joins an array of locally inspired finishes such as Fynbos, Churchhaven, Mother of Pearl (abalone), Ostrich, Fig Green, and Blush, alongside the studio’s signature metallic lustres.
Mervyn Gers, owner and creative director, explains: “Living and creating in Cape Town, we’re constantly influenced by the landscape around us, and Beach grew from a desire to capture that serene, elemental feeling in ceramic form. It’s inspired by the shifting tones of the coastline – the softness of wet sand, sun-bleached shells, sea mist and the layered neutrals found where land meets water.”
Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2026, Cloud Dancer, has been described as “a symbol of calming influence in a society rediscovering the value of quiet reflection”. Gers notes that amid increasingly fast-paced lifestyles, there is a growing appreciation for interiors and objects that create a sense of ease and balance. “Beach speaks directly to that mood. It is soft without being flat, neutral without feeling cold, and has a quiet sophistication that settles beautifully into both contemporary and layered interiors.”
As with many of the studio’s reactive glazes, there is an element of unpredictability within the finish. No two pieces emerge exactly the same from the kiln, giving Beach a richness and individuality that feels authentic and alive.
Sales Director Shireen Ridgway adds that one of the most compelling aspects of reactive glazes is the way they respond differently to each form and surface. “Beach develops unique tonal shifts depending on the shape, curvature, and texture of the piece. On flatter surfaces, it appears soft and velvety, while on more sculptural or textured forms it reveals greater depth and movement.”
She continues: “We love that Beach feels timeless rather than trend-driven. It doesn’t demand attention, yet it has incredible presence through its texture and tonal variation.”
he glaze blends effortlessly with other colours and textures while still feeling distinctive on its own. Its understated, nature-inspired palette complements food beautifully without overpowering it and pairs naturally with materials such as wood, linen, stone, and glass.
The studio develops all glazes in-house and can create bespoke options tailored to client requirements. Every item passes through 22 pairs of hands before it is ready to ship to its new home, reflecting the care, craftsmanship and attention to detail behind each piece. The range is also food-safe, dishwasher-safe, and microwave-safe, combining artisanal beauty with everyday practicality and durability.
“Every glaze is developed with the understanding that ceramics are inherently alive – shaped by fire, minerals, movement, and human hands. Beach is a celebration of that process. Like the shoreline that inspired it, the glaze is never static,” Gers concludes. “Each piece carries subtle variations and markings that make it completely unique, which is something we deeply value as a handmade studio rooted in craftsmanship and authenticity. It encourages slower, more intentional dining and living, which feels very aligned with how people want to experience their homes today.”
