Legal Setbacks and Livestock Disease Dampen Spur’s Growth Prospects. That despite reports of strong financial performance.

Despite reporting a strong financial performance for the year ending June 2026, the Spur Corporation is facing a significant “double blow” that threatens its momentum.

Legal Blow (The GPS Food Group Dispute):

The most immediate impact comes from a long-standing legal battle with GPS Food Group regarding a failed joint venture for a rib-processing facility. In August 2026, an arbitrator ruled against Spur, leading the group to set aside a massive R129.5 million provision for damages. While Spur intends to appeal, this provision has significantly impacted their bottom-line figures.

Agricultural Crisis (Foot-and-Mouth Disease):

The ongoing national Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, which led to a state of disaster earlier in 2026, continues to plague the red meat supply chain. For a steakhouse-centric brand like Spur, the movement restrictions on livestock and the resulting pressure on beef pricing and availability act as a major headwind, neutralizing the “boost” expected from a recovering consumer market.

While Spur’s revenue remains resilient (climbing to over R4 billion), these external legal and agricultural factors are squeezing margins and complicating the group’s short-term outlook.
