Damage is visible at CPUT’s Bellville campus after the Old Education Building was set alight on Monday evening amid ongoing student protests.

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has closed all campuses and ordered the immediate evacuation of student residences following an arson attack on the Old Education building at its Bellville campus.

The fire occurred on Monday evening, and university management confirmed that fire officials responded to the incident. This action comes as tensions rise over proposed financial clearance rules and registration requirements for 2027.

The fire and escalating violence have forced the university to close all campuses and evacuate student residences, with management warning of growing safety concerns for students and staff.
