South Africa Crime Stats Q1 2026 show a mixed picture for public safety, with murders declining compared with the same period last year but attempted murder and assault increasing.
The South African Police Service released the first-quarter crime statistics for the 2026/27 financial year on Friday, 28 August 2026. The figures cover crimes reported between 1 April and 30 June 2026.
According to the figures, 5,427 murders were recorded during the three-month period. That was 343 fewer murders than during April to June 2025, representing a decrease of 5.9%.
While any reduction in killings is significant, the statistics also show that South Africa continues to face extremely high levels of violent crime.
1. Murders Fall by 5.9%
The most notable finding in the South Africa Crime Stats Q1 2026 is the year-on-year decline in murder.
Police recorded 5,427 murders during the quarter, compared with approximately 5,770 during the same period a year earlier.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia cautioned against treating the decline as a reason for complacency, saying that every murder remains one too many.
There was, however, a difference between the year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter picture.
During the previous quarter, January to March 2026, South Africa recorded 5,181 murders. The April-to-June figure of 5,427 therefore represents an increase of 246 murders compared with the immediately preceding three months, even though it is lower than the same period in 2025.
2. Gauteng and Western Cape Record Fewer Murders
Several provinces recorded reductions in murders.
Gauteng saw the largest numerical drop, with murders decreasing from 1,429 to 1,276, a reduction of 153.
The Western Cape recorded 1,071 murders, down from 1,148 during the comparable period last year — a reduction of 77.
The Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo also recorded decreases, while Mpumalanga and North West registered increases.
These figures show that improvements are not being experienced equally across the country.
3. Attempted Murder Rises Sharply
One of the most concerning results in the South Africa Crime Stats Q1 2026 is the increase in attempted murder.
Police recorded 6,958 attempted murders, up from 6,401 during the same period last year.
That represents an increase of 557 cases, or 8.7%.
Assault also moved in the wrong direction.
Cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm increased by 2.5% to 38,589, while common assault rose by 2% to 42,491 cases.
This means the decline in murders has not yet translated into a broad reduction across all categories of violent crime.
4. Carjackings and Robberies Decline
There was better news in several major robbery categories.
Carjackings fell 18.2%, from 4,657 cases to 3,811.
House robberies declined 17.6%, falling from 5,360 to 4,416, while business robberies decreased 11.8%, from 3,099 to 2,733.
Taken together, the three categories commonly described as trio crimes fell by 16.4%, from 13,116 to 10,960 cases.
Truck hijackings also fell sharply, dropping 21% from 414 incidents to 327.
These reductions are among the strongest improvements in the latest quarterly figures.
5. Women and Children Remain Especially Vulnerable
The South Africa Crime Stats Q1 2026 also highlight the continuing danger faced by women and children.
Of the 5,427 murders recorded during the quarter, 723 victims were verified as women or children.
Women and children accounted for 1,377 attempted murder victims and 8,814 of the 9,201 rape victims recorded during the period.
Overall sexual offences decreased only marginally, falling 0.8% from 11,630 to 11,532 cases. Reported rape cases declined by just 32, from 9,233 to 9,201.
Police Target 140 High-Crime Stations
According to the latest figures, contact crime overall declined by 2.3%, with 142,112 cases recorded compared with 145,446 during the same quarter last year.
Police authorities have identified 140 high-crime police stations for prioritised intervention. The strategy includes strengthening crime intelligence and detective services and intensifying operations targeting organised crime, extortion, illegal mining and gang violence.
The quarterly results therefore offer some grounds for cautious optimism, particularly in murder, carjacking and aggravated robbery.
But the rise in attempted murder and assault demonstrates that South Africa’s violent-crime problem remains severe.
The South Africa Crime Stats Q1 2026 may show movement in the right direction in several categories, but behind every figure is a victim, family or community affected by crime. Sustained reductions across all major violent-crime categories will be the real measure of progress.
