The Ideas are There – Gaining Momentum
Hermanus – Slowly but surely, the Dignity to Rise Movement is gaining momentum, with residents, businesses, community organisations and Overstrand Municipality joining hands to turn ideas into practical action, with the main focus of creating jobs and business opportunities.
The 120-Day Activation started in Hermanus as a pilot. At the first workshop in May 2026, participants chose a sector of interest and identified practical projects. Now, it is time to turn those ideas into action.
As part of this work, around 75 NGOs, community organisations, schools and early childhood development centres across the Overstrand have been consulted to identify where support is needed. Needs include working with children, food programmes, mentoring and small business support, professional skills, enterprise development, administration and hands-on community projects.
The ideas are there – residents urged to register
Residents are now encouraged to register their skills, experience, time or ideas. This could mean offering a few hours occasionally, providing regular support, sharing professional expertise or helping with practical projects. Sector leaders from the Dignity to Rise Movement will coordinate these efforts and help connect people with opportunities where their contribution is most needed.
Businesses and organisations that can offer internships, mentorships, work experience or other opportunities are also encouraged to get involved.

The initiative is supported by the Overstrand Municipality’s Socio-Economic Development Department, with the intention of taking the approach to other towns, including Gansbaai, Stanford and Kleinmond, depending on local needs and the availability of people willing to get involved.
