Film project funding call now open

Cape Town – The City of Cape Town invites filmmakers to apply for support for film projects. Submissions are open from 7 September for film productions scheduled for completion in the 2026/27 financial year.
Following the successful launch of the third Film Fund, the City of Cape Town is pleased to open an additional funding round for film project support.
Filmmakers are invited to submit applications by 7 October 2026 for productions expected to be completed in the 2026/27 financial year.

Film fund for Cape Town productions
The film fund provides financial support or municipal services support for film projects produced in Cape Town.
The fund aims to support productions that drive local economic development and create job opportunities across the broader film and media value chain. It also seeks to select projects that strengthen Cape Town’s emerging talent base through targeted upskilling and training initiatives.
‘The City is pleased to launch an additional Film Fund call as an extension of Round Three, aimed at filmmakers with projects nearing completion. We witnessed the impact of the Film Fund during this year’s Silwerskerm Festival, where two supported projects were screened.
‘Projects backed through earlier funding rounds are also performing strongly on the festival circuit, highlighting the quality of talent emerging from Cape Town. We look forward to supporting a new selection of projects that will continue to showcase our city’s creative excellence and strengthen its position as a premier filmmaking hub,’ said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.
Criteria for projects
The City is seeking projects that align with the following criteria:
- Projects that stimulate local economic growth and create jobs within the City of Cape Town;
- Film and media projects that highlight and promote the unique aspects of Cape Town;
- Initiatives that support and upskill emerging talent in the film and media sector within Cape Town;
- Programmes that drive sustainability, diversity, and inclusion within the local film and media landscape;
- Projects that authentically portray Cape Town’s rich history and cultural heritage; and
- Film and media projects capable of attracting direct investment into the City of Cape Town.
Film projects that can be considered for funding include production, and post-production funding for short films, feature films such as animation, interactive gaming and reality TV series.
Projects must be completed within the City of Cape Town’s financial year (1 July 2026 – 30 June 2027).

Film permits are required for all film-related activity including: commercials; feature films; documentaries; micro shoots; music videos; short films; stills photography; student projects; TV films and productions; and TV pilots or series.
You do not need a film permit when filming a wedding ceremony or private celebration or when filming current affairs or news for immediate release.
