His contribution to South Africa’s art landscape is immense. He is a master artist who can work magic with both brush and clay. He is an unparalleled curator who has made his mark, particularly at national arts festivals. Moreover, he is a playwright, critic and mentor to many – not only artists, but anyone who needs guidance and wisdom in life.

When Theo Kleynhans was diagnosed with liver cancer in July, he decided to do what he does best: celebrate life through art, with an exhibition entitled “You Think You’ve Got Time.”
“As most of the people close to me already know, I was diagnosed with liver cancer in July this year,” says Theo. “Unfortunately, according to the medical team, there is no treatment that will make any meaningful difference, and the prognosis is that I will most likely not see 2027.
“This is, of course, a reality I never imagined I would have to face, but it has also made me realise just how valuable the people, friendships and experiences in my life have been, as well as my own creative journey. I therefore decided that on 29 August, I would not only hold an exhibition at Art B Gallery in Bellville but also turn it into a celebration of life and art, and of the people who have enriched my life over the years.”
All the works in the exhibition will be for sale, with the proceeds going towards Theo’s palliative care. The exhibition and logistics, as well as the management of the funds, are being handled by his close friends Janine Vorster and Chris Koch.

A total of 68 artists have donated work to the exhibition on 29 August, a testament to the impact Theo has had on so many careers and lives. The participating artists include Diane Victor, Hanneke Benade, Henk Serfontein, Sandra Hanekom, Paul Birchall, Marieke Kleynscheldt, Juria le Roux, Judy Woodbourne, Hennie Meyer, Barbara Wildenboer, Theo Paul Vorster, Chris Koch, Cobus van Bosch, Pauline Gutter, Alex Hamilton, Gretchen Crotz, Diek Grobler, Marie Stander, Marinda du Toit and Stephan Rosin.

There will also be new and existing work by Theo himself, including pieces being exhibited in South Africa for the first time. These range from works created during his time in Spain to new pieces made following his diagnosis.
The exhibition opens at 14:00, and all the works on display will be available for purchase. There will also be a raffle for one of Theo’s own works.
The exhibition catalogue will be available on the Art B website for those who are unable to attend in person. Online sales will open at 14:30 via WhatsApp on 082 463 5257. If a work is still available, payment can be made and, once proof of payment has been received, the work will be marked as sold. Art B can arrange nationwide courier delivery.
Art B Gallery is located at the Bellville Library, Carel van Aswegen Street, Bellville.
